COLOUR CHOICE

I choose to go for a monochromatic look to my website because I was struck by the effectiveness of the simplicity and minimal nature of the Brisbane advertising agency WTTF (http://www.wttf.com.au/). I used this site as my inspiration and it all started with choosing a background colour for my website.

I've chosen a very cool colour temperature as I would like to convey the impression of a simple, elegant and calm approach to my approach to design for my website. This is not always the case when attempting to manage my time deadlines but I'm happy to continue faking it till I make it.

I noticed that the WTTF site used a background colour in an animation that drew it's inspiration from 'once upon a time' tales. The text for the written narration of the animation was placed on a background that looked like handmade paper from antiquity. Subsequently, I chose a background theme of recycled paper and adjusted the opaqueness to not make it appear so dominant. Then I accidentally deleted the recycled background. In the process of applying the background theme to the website page, I discovered one of the colours from my colour theme very closely resembled it so, decided to go with simplicity and removed the background theme.

I conducted some research into the use of colour in websites and the psychology of colour in marketing and I noticed that design becomes effective when a:

  • Background colour

  • Base colour

  • Accent colour

are all used within the same site (Byers, 2018).

The accent colour is particularly useful when I want people to remember something. I also like the use of an accent colour to add a little vibrancy to my site as it was perhaps looking a little too dull and as this was a site designed to promote myself, I wanted to add a little vibrancy.

An accent colour taken from the colour palette and added to the rollover colour of text in the menu, icon badges at the bottom of the page and also my name which appears in the banner. The accent colour was also added to the lines that were used to draw attention to the subheadings used on the site and separated the subheading from the main text.
